Vigtek is a small software studio. Most of our work is in hospitality and the public sector, where the data is messy and the rules vary from one city or county to the next. We build the software and then we operate it, on the view that a system no one maintains stops being useful before long.

Meaning
Before we design anything, we work out what the thing actually is and who has to live with it. It sounds obvious, and it gets skipped all the time. A good deal of bad software is a capable answer to a question that was never asked clearly.

Structure
Underneath the surface there is a structure that holds everything in proportion, each part to the next and to the whole. Get that right and a system can grow for years without losing its shape. Neglect it and changes grow riskier over time, until people are reluctant to touch the code at all.

Clarity
Someone has to use what we build, and if they can’t tell what is happening, the rest of the effort counts for little. We would rather a screen explain itself than ship with a manual. Clear usually beats clever, though getting there takes more work than it looks.
